Embracing Neurodiversity: How new research strengthens our mission

At Unothered Paths, we’ve always believed that every child’s mind is beautifully unique. Whether a child is curious, sensitive, creative, analytical—or all of these at once—they deserve to be seen and supported just as they are. So when new research comes along that echoes this belief, it’s worth celebrating.

A recent study by VanDaalen et al. (2025) looked at how people understand and talk about the Neurodiversity Movement. It’s a topic that touches the heart of what we do: supporting families of children and young people with high learning potential and dual or multiple exceptionalities (gifted and/or twice-exceptional). The researchers asked people who were already aware of the neurodiversity movement to describe what it meant to them. Most of the responses were hopeful and positive. People spoke about the importance of acceptance, inclusion, and valuing differences in how people think, feel and experience the world.

But the study also showed that many people had only a partial understanding of what neurodiversity really means. Some focused mainly on autism. Others weren’t sure how it applied to children with complex or ‘spiky’ learning profiles—children who might shine in one area and struggle in another. This is exactly why conversations like these matter.

What This Means for Unothered Paths

The findings of this research strongly support our values and approach. At Unothered Paths, we see neurodivergence – whether it’s ADHD, autism, dyslexia, or anything else – not as a flaw to fix, but as a natural and important part of human diversity.

This research shows:

  • that celebrating strengths and differences really does change how people think and act
  • that we need to keep amplifying voices -especially those of children and young people with twice-exceptional profiles
  • that we should be building learning environments where all children can thrive – not just fit in

It also reminds us that not everyone sees the full picture yet. So, as parents, carers and teachers, we have an opportunity and a responsibility to help broaden understanding and gently challenge old ideas that no longer serve our children.

If you’re new to this journey, you’re not alone. Perhaps your child doesn’t quite fit the expected mould. Maybe they’re highly able in some areas but find school overwhelming. Or perhaps they’ve been labelled difficult or different when really, they’re just trying to navigate the world with a different set of tools.

This research shows that public understanding is growing. People are beginning to see that neurodivergent children don’t need to be changed – they need to be understood. They need time, space, kindness, and a chance to learn in ways that work for them.

Together, we can shape a world that embraces the whole child, not just their marks or challenges, but everything that makes them who they are.

If you’re looking for ways to support your child or your students, or simply want to understand more, we’re here for you at Unothered Paths. Because when we honour difference, we give every child the chance to flourish.

Warmest wishes,

Unothered Paths
